How the Credit Card Grace Period Works

A grace period is the gap between the end of your billing cycle and the date your payment is due. During this window, you are not charged interest on your purchases, provided you paid your previous balance in full.

The Gold Rule of 0% Interest

To keep your interest-free status, you must pay the Full Statement Balance by the due date. If you pay only the minimum, the grace period is usually "revoked," and interest begins accruing on your average daily balance immediately.

Our calculator helps you maximize this period. For example, a purchase made right after your statement date can stay interest-free for up to 50+ days (the 30 days of the cycle plus the 21-day grace period).

Grace Period FAQ

1. Do all credit cards have a grace period?
Most do for purchases, but many "subprime" cards or cards for bad credit do not. Always check your Cardmember Agreement.
2. Does the grace period apply to Cash Advances?
No. Interest usually starts accruing on cash advances the minute you take the money out.
3. What happens if I miss the due date by one day?
You will likely be charged a late fee AND interest will be backdated to the purchase date.
4. How can I get my grace period back?
Generally, you need to pay your balance in full for two consecutive billing cycles to "reset" the interest-free grace period.
